The University District — commonly called the U-District — is a dense, walkable neighborhood surrounding the University of Washington's main Seattle campus. It's one of the city's most diverse and lively areas, with University Way NE (known as The Ave) lined with an eclectic mix of cafes, restaurants, bookstores, and shops serving the large student and faculty population as well as local residents. The neighborhood has seen significant investment in recent years, particularly around the new U-District Light Rail Station. Cowen Park at the northern edge of the U-District has free public restrooms in a quiet, wooded setting. The park connects to Ravenna Park via a green trail corridor and is a lovely spot to take a break. The restrooms are open during park hours and are maintained by Seattle Parks and Recreation. The park is particularly popular with dog walkers and families. The UW Light Rail Station at NE 43rd Street and Brooklyn Ave NE has clean, accessible restrooms that are open until 1am, well past the hours of most park facilities. The station connects directly to downtown Seattle, Capitol Hill, Sea-Tac Airport, and Northgate, making it one of the most useful transit hubs on the north end of the city. The University Branch Library on NE 50th Street is a reliable restroom option during open hours. The library is open to the public and has clean, accessible facilities. Seattle Public Library hours vary by day so checking ahead is recommended, especially on holidays. U-Village shopping center on NE 45th Street and 25th Ave NE has restrooms available during mall hours. The open-air mall has a mix of national retailers and restaurants and is a popular destination for the neighborhood. Street parking and a parking garage are available on site. The University of Washington campus itself has numerous restroom facilities inside its buildings, though access can vary depending on the time of day and whether buildings are open to the public. The main quad area and Husky Stadium vicinity have the most reliably accessible public facilities on campus.
